Women of rural India today are not confined to the four walls of their homes, but they are playing an active role in areas like farming, animal husbandry and self-employment. Especially through Self Help Groups (SHGs), women are being united and motivated towards self-reliance. In this sequence, RSKS India organized an “Organic Farming Program” with the women of SHG, which not only trains them for environmentally friendly farming, but also becomes a means of their economic empowerment.

The main objective of this program was to introduce the women of SHG to chemical-free, sustainable and profitable farming methods, so that they can increase the yield of their farming and also maintain the fertility of the land. Organic farming not only gives healthy crops, but its value in the market is also high. This also gives women an opportunity to earn additional income.

The expert team of RSKS India gave detailed information to the women on topics such as organic fertilizers (such as cow dung manure, vermicompost), neem based pesticides, seed conservation, crop rotation system and water conservation. Through practical demos, the techniques were explained to the women by visiting the field, so that they do not face any difficulty in experimenting themselves in the future.

In the program, women were motivated to adopt homemade organic methods instead of chemicals in their fields, which will protect the environment as well as the health of the family.

Many women associated with SHGs praised this initiative and said that till now they were dependent on chemical fertilizers, due to which the quality of the land was deteriorating and the cost was also high. But with these methods of organic farming, they can now get more profit at a lower cost.

A woman farmer enthusiastically said, “Now we do not have to worry about both our land and health. We will adopt organic farming and inspire others too.”

This program not only gave women knowledge of agricultural techniques, but also developed self-confidence, leadership skills and team spirit. Now they are also thinking of selling organic products through their SHG group, which will give them a permanent source of income.

This program on organic farming with SHG women by RSKS India is a strong, sensitive and visionary initiative, which provides a path to rural women to become self-reliant. This program shows that when women are educated and empowered, they not only improve their economic condition but also take the society and environment in a positive direction.

We should also support such efforts and lay the foundation of a healthy, prosperous and sustainable future by promoting organic farming.
