Rural women in India are the foundation of family, social and economic life. They not only manage their households but also contribute to farm work, animal husbandry, handicrafts, sewing and embroidery. But for a long time they were limited to the role of only “housewife”. In today’s time, if rural India is to be empowered, then first of all the women there have to be made economically self-reliant.
With this thought, RSKS India organized an EDP (Entrepreneurship Development Programme) program with rural women. The objective of this program was to guide women towards entrepreneurship, prepare them for self-employment and build self-confidence in them.
In this EDP program, women were trained on topics like the process of starting a business, understanding market demand, planning investment and capital, marketing strategies, customer service, and accounting. This training was not only theoretical, but was also explained to the women through practical activities, group work and case studies.
A new shine was seen in the eyes of the women involved in the program. Many women told that they had some skill for years, such as sewing, pickle making, incense stick manufacturing, beauty parlor etc., but they did not know how to turn it into a business. This training given by RSKS India became a new window of knowledge, inspiration and opportunity for them.
In this program, women were also given information about government schemes, such as Mudra Yojana, Self Help Group Assistance, Bank Loan etc., so that they can get financial assistance in starting their business. Apart from this, experiences of successful women entrepreneurs were shared, so that the participating women could get real inspiration.
This program of RSKS India was not just a training session for women, but it was an opportunity to change the direction of their lives. At the end of the training, some women also shared their plans to start small businesses, in which the organization promised to guide them further.
The EDP programme organised by RSKS India is a concrete and effective initiative towards economically empowering rural women. This programme shows that if women are given the right guidance, training and encouragement, they can take forward not only themselves but the entire society on their own.
Such initiatives strengthen gender equality and economic development in the society, and realize the goal of “Empowered Women, Empowered Society”.
