My name is Manika, and I have been a teacher in a village school for over 15 years. I’ve always been passionate about educating children, especially girls, as they are the future of our community. One of the most impactful experiences I’ve had as a teacher was witnessing the “My Childhood My Right” program organized by RSKS India. This program focused on ending child marriage, something that affects many girls in our area.
The workshop began with a presentation by the RSKS India team using flip charts to teach the 50 schoolgirls about the harmful effects of child marriage. As I watched the children’s faces, I could see their curiosity and concern. The team explained how child marriage deprives girls of their education, leads to early pregnancies, health risks, and can even result in violence. For many of the girls, this was the first time they had been given the opportunity to understand such a serious issue that could affect their own lives or the lives of those they know.
After the presentation, the girls were given drawing sheets and asked to create artwork based on their understanding of the issue. It was heartwarming to see how seriously they took the task. One girl drew a picture of a girl with books in one hand and chains in the other, symbolizing how child marriage traps girls and prevents them from achieving their dreams. Another girl drew a broken heart, representing the emotional trauma that comes with early marriage. These drawings showed me just how deeply the girls had internalized the message of the workshop.
Following the artwork session, the girls participated in a public rally in our village. They held posters that read, “Say No to Child Marriage” and “Let Girls Be Girls.” It was incredibly moving to see these young voices stand up for their rights and the rights of others. As they marched through the village, they spread a powerful message to the community about the importance of protecting girls from early marriage and ensuring they have the chance to complete their education.
At the end of the event, RSKS India handed out small rewards like chocolates, colors, and pens to each girl. It was a simple but meaningful gesture that reinforced the positive impact of the program. For me, watching the girls confidently advocate for their own futures was a truly inspiring moment. I am grateful to RSKS India for bringing this crucial message to our village. It is a reminder that every girl has the right to a childhood full of opportunities and hope for a brighter future.
