In a developing country like India, the role of women is extremely important, especially rural women who, besides being the sole breadwinner of the family, also actively participate in agriculture, animal husbandry and household chores. But, for a long time this class has been deprived of education, employment and self-reliance. Today, when the country is moving towards self-reliance, empowerment of rural women has become essential. In this context Rajasthan Samagra Kalyan Sansthan took an important step and organized a 90 days sewing training program which not only imparts skills to the women but also provides them employment opportunities. The aim of this program was not only to teach sewing but also to prepare the women for self-employment, strengthen their financial condition, increase their respect in the society and ensure permanent employment.
The duration of this training program was 90 days which was divided into three main phases. In the first phase, women were taught how to operate a sewing machine, thread tying, straight and circle stitching, in which they became proficient in stitching simple clothes like handkerchief, blouse and pyjama. In the second phase, they were taught the art of taking measurements, cutting cloth, sewing salwar-kurta, suit, children’s clothes, decoration and correct fitting. In the final phase, the basic elements of fashion designing, boutique star sewing, machine repair, embroidery, lace work along with information about customer behavior and sales marketing. Along with the training, women were encouraged by doing practical work, regional visits and awarding certificates.
This programme is very important for women empowerment, as most rural women are deprived of essential education and are busy in household work and are financially dependent on their families. This training taught them to stand on their own feet, which increased their self-confidence, developed their decision-making ability and they started contributing to the income of their families. Many women have started their own sewing centres. This change is not just individual but is a result of the spread of positive thinking and inspiration in the society.
This training has had a deep impact on social aspects also. Women who were earlier confined to the four walls of their house, today talk to their customers, take orders for sewing, sell their products and have also started training other women. This has awakened a sense of leadership among rural women. In many villages, these strong women have become a source of inspiration for other women, encouraging them to move towards self-reliance and friendship.
